Hair Extension

Hair extensions are very popular amongst celebrities today. Hair extensions are attached either to the natural hair or scalp. With this, the thickness or the length of the hair is enhanced. There are different types of hair extensions where the more popular ones are strands, wefts and braids.

Strands are small clusters of about thirty pieces of hair while wefts are larger clusters of hair attached to the top and are let to hang freely at the ends. It is better to use hand made wefts and not machine made wefts. The braids and dreadlocks used for hair extensions are all pre-wound.

The hair extensions are either made of synthetic material or from human hair. When choosing hair extensions, choose the one that matches your hair as it is obvious that the hair of Caucasians and Asians are different. These hair extensions are available in different varieties where some are pre-colored, pre-permed or pre-highlighted.

Hair extensions are not permanent; and depending on the way the hair extension was done, it may have to be redone in 6 - 8 weeks. This is because as the natural hair grows, the bonding between the extension and natural hair loosens wherein you have to re-adjust your hairstyle. Strands of hair extensions are usually glued, woven or clipped to the natural hair. It is preferable to have clipped extensions if you intend to take them off after some time. If glue is preferred, different bonding agents may be used so you have to take care in protecting your scalp and natural hair.

If you opt for wefts, a small corn row is either made or natural hair is weaved in where the weft can be sewed to the weave. With this option, no chemicals are used. In the case of braids, it is usually woven with your own hair, wherein there is no necessity of using any chemicals. Now comes the question of which hair extension is most likely to suit you.

This is a decision which you and your stylist should be able to make. This is because hair extensions are available for all kinds of hair. On assessing your hair type, the hair stylist will be able to describe how you will look in the different types of hair extensions. You will also be advised on whether hair extension is favorable for your hair status; if it is not advised, they will provide alternatives for you. Once the right hair extension is decided on, the hair stylist customizes it so that it matches your hair style and then attaches it. You will be explained on the procedure of attaching the hair extensions and what has to be done to maintain it. It is safe to shampoo, style and brush hair extensions. However, the color should not be altered by you; seek professional help if you need to change the color.

When washing, it is better to be gentle as this preserves its bonding. If there are any tangles, use a soft bristled brush to remove the tangles. It is better to braid the hair extensions when sleeping to avoid matting; however, never sleep when the hair is wet or damp. It is advisable to avoid silicone-based products on the hair extensions as it separates the hair extensions.
